Thoughts on Choice, Destiny and Other Unknowables

"To achieve greatly, you must understand that you have a claim on life, and your claim is substantially greater than the settlement life will offer you."

"We look back on a life of free choice and yet with a sense that we have the children we were destined to have."

"The last I heard from my destiny, it wanted me to make a legal U-Turn at my next opportunity."

"I say to my child, I will explain to you as much of life as I can, but you must remember that there is a part of life for which you are the explanation."

"Seeking peace of mind, you convince yourself that God is an illusion -- and spend the rest of your days searching for the Illusionist."

"The same natural disaster that causes some to doubt a loving God moves others to act as His agent."

"Perhaps God sends natural disasters not to torment the faithful but to identify them."

"I believe this -- that a child has sufficiently memorized his catechism when he knows all the questions."

An Anniverary Thought

"The sweetest thing about celebrating the achievement of a long marriage is to remember the days when you used to celebrate your plans."

So fun to see you here again today. I loved the anniversary thought - -that's one thing I do enjoy about being older: the ability to look back and see how far we have come. Thanks for your thoughts - -they always make me smile.

Hi Robert
It's really nice to hear from you again.
"Perhaps God sends natural disasters not to torment the faithful but to identify them." This one stood out...possibly because it's current, but brilliant nonetheless.

You always make me think. I'm at a complete loss in trying to understand how one person can deal with so many different topics so skillfully. Makes me wonder how your mind works. You say some very interesting things and compress them so succinctly. Makes me think of the book (by Robert Fulgum, I think) about words I wish I had said. Good to see you always, my friend. donkimrey

Hi Robert...
Are you and Joan celebrating an anniversary?

"I say to my child, I will explain to you as much of life as I can, but you must remember that there is a part of life for which you are the explanation."
I love this one, Robert!
and it brought me to this ol' thought:
'Know thyself.'

So nice to see you here!

Jan,
A warm hello. As I said somewhere else, "Life is a quest for a fondly-imagined leisure that, when achieved, is spent fondly remembering the quest."

Marlene,
Greetings across The Great Divide. Kindly stop sending your Pacific rainstorms to Connecticut. They just roll off our frozen turf and into the Atlantic.

Ken,
Yo. You picked one that I sort of borrowed. It comes from the story about a USGA official being asked why they made the U.S. Open golf course so difficult, "Are you trying to embarrass the best golfers in the world?" he was asked. "No," he replied, "we're trying to identify them."

Don,
Good to hear from you. I wish I could have said something a little wiser about Haiti. In my darker moments, it strikes me as a case of those who think they have been spared by God burying those who actually have been.

Maria,
Joan and I just celebrated our "engagement anniversary", which really began it all for us, especially for me, since I was a 40-year-old bachelor at the time.

smiles all,
rb

Oh - welcome back, Robert! It's good to be able to read your wise words again!

Patricia,
Brevity is often mistaken for wisdom, since it leaves the reader to supply his or her own. You have much to supply, as your "Musings from the Mind of a Mid-Life Mom" shows time and again.

"I say to my child, I will explain to you as much of life as I can, but you must remember that there is a part of life for which you are the explanation." so true Robert - kids add so much to our life - depth, grace, meaning - plus challange..

Raj,
Thanks for the comment. There's plenty of thought material in the words "depth, grace, meaning and challenge."
