New Thoughts From An Old Head

"You know you're succeeding when the people telling you it can't be done start changing their reasons."

"An optimist believes that the best in the human spirit will prevail. So do I, and I'm not an optimist."

"It is not that love is blind. It is that love sees with a painter's eye, finding the essence that renders all else background."

"I refuse to be burdened by vague worries. If something wants to worry me, it will have to make itself clear."

"My age? Let me put it this way. In the dance of life, I am applauding the band."

"Every human being is a process. Me, I'm a process for converting good red wine into the milk of human kindness."

"A new Western renaissance may today seem impossible, but the lesson of human progress is that a thing is only impossible until it becomes inevitable."

"The first assumption of an art critic is that the artist meant to paint something else."

"Meanwhile, I've been boning up on Wall St. firms, should the day ever come when I'm incapable of mismanaging my own investments."

"There was never a government that didn't feel threatened by three or more people holding hands in public."

"There are 6.6 billion human beings, each responding in his or her own unique and individual way to the gravitational pull of the moon."

I am so glad that you continue sharing these with us. You have no idea, Robert, what a one line quote can do in the heart of a person. Your words are used to bless, uplift, bring a smile and reflection into ones being.

Never underestimate the power of sharing a gift ♥

These two really hit a cord with me, they are lovely quotes that I will steal and quote on my blog with your permission (although I know I met you by quoting you on my blog without your permission).

"It is not that love is blind. It is that love sees with a painter's eye, finding the essence that renders all else background."

"The first assumption of an art critic is that the artist meant to paint something else."

Every time I read a new post from you it's like a little reminder to think with my heart more often. Thank you for still posting. <3

These are all great, as usual, but here is my favorite:

"I refuse to be burdened by vague worries. If something wants to worry me, it will have to make itself clear."

This one shouts at me. In a good way.

Thank you. I will keep your words in mind. Thanks very much for the kind mention on your site.

Marlene,
Glad you like. This started out to be a "Thoughts on Art and Artists" post, but I reconsidered most of them. Began to sound too much like a critic myself.

Ms. Kristi,
If my words indeed have such an effect on you, I am about as satisfied with my efforts as I can be. Thank you.

Sue,
If there's a thought of mine that I'd really like to put into personal practice, that's the one.

smiles all,

I love: "The first assumption of an art critic is that the artist meant to paint something else." I have been fortunate, I have had only 2 art critics--a teacher in college and.. myself. And we were both wrong!

This is a mantra for me......Thanks Robert. You never disappoint me...:)

Hi Robert!
I enjoyed all your quotes tonight.

... It is that love sees with a painter's eye~ this is a beautiful quote that left me teary-eyed.

I wish I could take back all my "worry time."

"I refuse to be burdened by vague worries. If something wants to worry me, it will have to make itself clear."
What a good adage to follow! Time is so precious!

Thank you for these wonderful thoughts, Robert!
They bring smiles and inspiration.
{or a little more reading as with your Kitty Hawk quote}

Enjoy this wonderful week!
We're having spring showers and then summer heat ~ typical northeast weather!

"You know you're succeeding when the people telling you it can't be done start changing their reasons." Ha ha--so true! Our challenge is to make sure we are not the ones coming up with the reasons why other people (namely our children, eh?)shouldn't succeed.

"It is not that love is blind. It is that love sees with a painter's eye, finding the essence that renders all else background." One of the most beautiful quotes on love that I have ever read.

"Meanwhile, I've been boning up on Wall St. firms, should the day ever come when I'm incapable of mismanaging my own investments."
A "laugh out loud" quote.

"There was never a government that didn't feel threatened by three or more people holding hands in public." You've been walking around inside my husband's brain again, haven't you? :)

I will echo what others have expressed---thank you Robert, for enlightening us.

You make me think, smile, laugh, ponder, and sometimes cry a little - but you always touch me in some way with your posts. I so look forward to them - more than you could imagine!!

Thank you!! ♥

Maxie,
I assume you mean that both "critics" underestimated your genius, which would be easy to do.

khushi,
I guess the closest I came to writing mantras was in my days as Al Fong Spong, although hardly in the Hindu tradition.

Maria,
Thanks. Yes, 50 degrees and raw today (something to suit my November personality); 80 degrees and sunny tomorrow (something for Joan's July roots.) Kinda think I'll revisit the Kitty Hawk quote. Not quite as universal a thought as I'd like.

Randi,
Thanks as ever for your thoughtful and friendly assessment. I'm pleased that you so often like items with a topical flavor. I'd do more of them, but I fancy that many come here to get away from the news of the day. Could be wrong.
Great to hear that you're successfully moved in, btw.

Teresa,
You are coming close to making me cry in return. My heartfelt thanks.

smiles all,

Ken,
Thanks, my friend. As I wrote on your blog, I wish you a fertile pen, an inspired brush and a happy sojourn in the countryside of France.

Azura,
Thanks. Great to hear from your part of the world. Took a peek at your site. Keep up your refreshingly honest assessments of what it is to live in these times.

Robert,
For over a year I have gone out each morning to find words of encouragement, insight and inspiration to set the tone for my day and to share with my friends on a social networking page.
I have read and shared hundreds of those quotes from the minds much more gifted than mine. They have included Churchill, Ziglar, Einstein, Rohn, Twain and the like.
I now include you on the top of that list...checking here first. Thanks so much for sharing your gifts.
You are quite the wordsmith my friend.

Marshall,
Thank you. You are gracious to comment. I am indeed a wordsmith, nothing more nor less, and have not recently been mistaken for Churchill, Twain or Einstein. "Under the spreading chestnut tree, the village smithy stands" - plucking chestnuts, whether ripe or not.

It has been my good fortune to have seen few brilliant singers perform on stage. Am gradually realizing that at that time the space is literally glowing with their aura - some how lighting all around them as well. This "spontaneous combustion" leaves a lasting impression - as does your fine "performance" here Robert. Grateful

Raj,
It is clear that your eye for analogy and metaphor, so richly displayed in your blog, extend also to your appreciations. Thank you.
