Some serious ...
"You wonder if the creator of reality had any idea people would take it so literally."
"If you listed all the reasons for your faith, and all the things that make you cry, it would be essentially the same list."
"We are, many of us, a planet orbiting somebody's sun, unconscious of a lonely moon, orbiting our planet."
"I don't know if there is a just God, but I know that when I act as His agent, He never complains."
"If you can make a child laugh, you can make its mother cry."
"In a soulmate we find not company but a completed solitude."
"Perhaps the reason that pets win a special place in our hearts is that they ask only a place in our hearts."
... some oh so observant
"What's frustrating about being disliked is that it's invariably for the wrong reason."
"It's annoying to be disapproved of by people who know only half the story -- especially when you're not sure which half they know."
"You can as easily love without trusting as you can hug without embracing."
"Child raising is an amateur activity that requires professional cleaning."
... and some silly
"One day the sun will implode, sucking the earth into a bottomless black hole, giving you a chance to do whatever you do when you don't have to vacuum."
"Meanwhile, my dentist has found a black hole in my molar system."
"Ideally you'd like to entertain guests in a spotless house that shows no signs of having been picked up, but sometimes you just have to settle for no signs of having been picked up."
I sorta, kinda envy
a leaf on a tree
that knows at a glance
its genealogy.
"The revolving door in politics? Well, take a bureaucrat who okays a government-funded study of the commercial uses of black holes -- then quits his job and goes to work for National Paperweight and Doorstop."
"Knowing that I like to surround myself with objects that are an extension of my personality, my wife just got me this really neat lead paperweight."
"After decrying wasteful government spending, one Georgia senator has come out in favor of an FDA program to determine the effects of massive overdoses of peanuts on laboratory elephants." (Okay, this is actually not that true.)
"And, finally, there's evidence that things are getting better, unless skin-related."

From this one, which I thought about quite seriously... "In a soulmate we find not company but a completed solitude" to the "silly" ones that made me smile, especially the one about the "lead paperweight".....I enjoyed every bit..:)Thanks Robert.
Making mothers cry, orbiting planet, disapproval, skin related, genealogy and the sun imploding got my attention. The one that tickled me most was"Child raising is an amateur activity that requires professional cleaning." The one that made me think the most.."We are, many of us, a planet orbiting somebody's sun, unconscious of a lonely moon, orbiting our planet."
Thanks Robert, you never fail. Have yourself a good week.
I had so many favorites, but I'll restrict my comments to the ones that affected me the most.
"We are, many of us, a planet orbiting somebody's sun, unconscious of a lonely moon, orbiting our planet." This one showed me how selfish we all can be at times. Or maybe self-centered would be a better word. I have, many times, set someone up on a pedestal, admiring them either from afar or blatantly. They seemed to be what I wanted to be, so that's where my focus was. And once a lady who I scarcely knew came up to me and said, "You know, all I want is to be your friend but I feel like you don't even acknowledge my existence." Ouch! While I was busy orbiting my sun, she was a lonely moon that I Failed to see. Yes, that's a Fail with a capital F.
"I don't know if there is a just God, but I know that when I act as His agent, He never complains." There was a song I learned as a first or second grader that went "Whatsoever you do to the least of My brothers, that you do unto Me." He never does complain when we help our brothers, as His agent.
"What's frustrating about being disliked is that it's invariably for the wrong reason." When I learn that someone doesn't like me, I automatically go into defense mode, and unfailingly determine that the reason for their dislike simply doesn't exist. After all, if they really knew me, what's not to like? :) But alas, as a good friend once told me, "If you have enough people telling you that you have a tail, it's time to turn around and look."
"Meanwhile, my dentist has found a black hole in my molar system." I just went to the dentist! Why didn't I think of molar system? Just another one of those things I wish I'd have thought of first. Good one.
All good, and all thought provoking. I'm so happy you caved in and continue to supply us with your philosophical musings. Oh hey, that should be your tagline---Robert Brault, Philosopher to the Blogosphere.
I loved the thought about faith and tears - they do seem to be connected, don't they?
Have a happy week - -loved finding you here this morning.
Thanks back, khushi. The silly stuff occurs to me far more often than the serious, but I usually succeed in quelching it.
Ken, I see that the one that tickled you most was not one of the silly ones. Proves again that true-to-life observations are the funniest. Till next time,
Randi, if you commented here just twice a year, I would wait for it with keen anticipation. Your mind works in a natural dialectic that would make old Hegel proud. You find connections in everything and draw from them the most engaging morals. I am speaking, of course, as much of your blog as your comments here. Thanks again.
Jan, as always you home in on the one most having to do with, well, home -- which is where faith is first taught and tears most often shed. You are entirely a good influence on this old blogger.

"If you listed all the reasons for your faith, and all the things that make you cry, it would be essentially the same list."
I just tested this theory...and yep, it's true!
=)
Sue,
Oh, okay -- from now on you're my official aphorism tester. The campaign for "Truth In Aphorisms" starts here.

Robert ~ these quotes are amazing!
I could personally relate to so many of them.
This one is just beautiful,
"In a soulmate we find not company but a completed solitude."
I also find this one as thought provoking as the others who commented,
"We are, many of us, a planet orbiting somebody's sun, unconscious of a lonely moon, orbiting our planet."
... and as Randi reminds us of that ole song, "Whatsoever you do to the least of my brothers..."
...awareness of one's 'brothers and sisters' can be the antidote.
Thank you for posting these, Robert~ As it is springtime and we are enjoying all the beautiful blossoms ... coming to these quotes tonight adds to the garden!
~Maria
You are my favorite quotester. :o)
Maria,
I like the garden analogy. It's nice to plant thoughts, but the greater satisfaction is to see them grow.
Maxie,
Thanks -- you incredibly talented artster. Nah, let's go with artist and quotist.

"If you can make a child laugh, you can make its mother cry." Each one is brilliant Robert - as is also evident from notes flowing in. Yours truly has been blessed with ability to make a child laugh! Deeply appreciated
Raj,
Thanks. The ability to make a child laugh is a redeeming characteristic in whomever it appears.

"Child raising is an amateur activity that requires professional cleaning." ...and many acclaimed professionals are amateurs who need a thorough cleaning.... it's a big hit on many a handicapped experts glorify themselves superiors..... .......... things are getting better unless skin-related... a well end of a post with a powerful punch.

"You wonder if the creator of reality had any idea people would take it so literally."
haha thats true!!
in the observant ones the one that i liked most was "It's annoying to be disapproved of by people who know only half the story -- especially when you're not sure which half they know."

soo thanks for those beautiful phrases
and hi from colombia <-maybe thats why my inglish its not so good, i really write better in spanish :P keep writing!
Anon,
Thanks so much for your kind comments, here and elsewhere. Your English is excellent. You seem to catch all the nuances I intend, for what they're worth. Really gratifying to find someone roaming the archives and discovering things I had thought forgotten.
I wonder...did you really say, "An aphorism is a single sentence that totally exhausts its subject."? Or had you thought to expand upon it later after you'd thought about it some more?
Drew, I get your drift, subtle fellow that I am, but, fact is, I not only haven't thought about it some more, I didn't think about it in the first place.
