I Am the Master of my Fate -- NOT!

"Alas, by the time Fate caught up with my life, Chance had it all planned."

"How helpless are the whims of Fate before the stratagems of Chance."

On a windswept hill
by a billowing sea,
my destiny sits
and waits for me.

"Be the master of your fate, be the captain of your soul, but do not hesitate, should the chance befall you, to be the slave of your heart."

"There are couples a matchmaker would match every time -- and couples who, for no rhyme or reason, rhyme."

I saw by the duck pond an elderly couple
throwing crumbs on the water,
close against each other,
thinking each other's thoughts,
casting each other's shadow,
and I wondered -- which had been the great love
and which the acquired taste that became an addiction.

"In the life we might have lived, the years never pass. On the person we might have been, time never leaves its mark. How different would seem our might-have-beens if we could picture them as would-be-nows.

Under every full moon
I recall a lagoon
where a mandolin played,
and memories stir
of the dreamers we were
and the plans that we made.

"Only in the playworld of a child's imagination is there a reason for everything."

"On days when I crave order in my life, I drop in on the playworld of my child."

"Anything we tell our kids about life is a placemarker until they figure it out for themselves."

"Life is a handful of irreversible decisions, none, with the grace of God and the diligence of our parents, made before age 18."

"No one ever decided to have kids based on a feasibility study."

"What is the fire in our belly but the eternal flame of a thousand ancestors."

"It is a curious thing, this world of my perception -- how I stand always at its center, and yet it pays me absolutely no mind."

Dear Bishop Berkeley:
If the world existed
But in my invention,
Wouldn't it pay me
More attention?

Thank you for the thought provoking morning, I think I need more coffee to fully appreciate all that is here.

Beautiful and much food for thought. Favorite? I am a sucker for being a slave to the heart. For me, the heart is where you find what really matters. And I"m loving the thought of dropping in on the playword of my (grand)child. Thank you for a great start to my day.

My favorite is 'the might have beens' and the 'would be nows'..... so TRUE!

Robert, you must have been channeling with me....I just wrote a chapter in my book a couple of days ago about Fate!

Marlene,
Thanks. I note that three followers have left me since I posted this. Hopefully, they've just gone for coffee.

Jan,
Thank you. I always try to include one or two for Jan.

Linda,
I'm glad you like that one. It's sometimes hard to think of the person we might have been as a contemporary.

BECKY,
I suspect that your thoughts on Fate are a bit more upbeat than this collection turned out to be.

Hi Robert! I've been a quiet observer of your blog and quotes for several months, and just wanted to say thanks for the inspiration. Being a junior philosopher, I've been writing a few thoughts about life myself. My latest came to me in a profound way while driving to work yesterday. Hope you enjoy! :)

"I was wondering if I live as reactive or proactive, so I stopped to think about it, and that was the answer."

Gray,
Great thought -- and the kind of quirky thing I have a weakness for. BTW, I'm a junior philosopher, too.

Sorry for the Delay in posting my thoughts on your latest post.Sadly I was delayed while in Brazil getting my coffee:O).

You know I'm going to gush all over you rb. So suck it up and smile.
A. You never ever seem to run out of some pretty neat insight about life and living.

B.My favorite of these(if I have to pick just one) is:
"Be the master of your fate, be the captain of your soul, but do not hesitate, should the chance befall you, to be the slave of your heart."

C.I can't wait to find some pictures to somehow convey some of these thoughts..but I will try.

D. I know you think I am being overly kind about your Blog...but I genuinely love your Blog posts.

I hate it when your posts bring tears to my eyes. I love it when your posts bring tears to my eyes.

Been thinking a lot lately about Fate and her friends.

And don't think I didn't notice the "under every full moon!"

Beautiful. All beautiful. Thank you.

Now THAT is romance and sweetness and every good emotional ingredient all folded gently together into a verse souffle that makes me at once nostalgic, happy, and even a little bit melancholy at time's passing. I know my husband is my great love, so I really, really hope that I'm the addiction (previously the acquired taste.)
Tasty stuff.

Ariana,
I have never, actually, found being gushed over that offensive. You have my blessing to continue. I do very much look forward to seeing my thoughts come alive in your illustrations.

Terri
(Note to readers: Terri is the proprietor of The Quote Garden and herself an aphorist of the first order. Some time back, she invited readers of her blog to finish a thought beginning, "Under every full moon... ." From that came the verse, above, albeit reworked several times since.)

Terri, thanks for taking note of these. I am so pleased to find that you've posted a couple in The Quote Garden. If you've been thinking about Fate, I much look forward to seeing a few new gems from your pen.

Karen,
Thanks for your thoughtfully-worded appreciation. I don't mean to imply that this characterization applies to all couples. There are marriages made in heaven, but now and again, there is heaven made in a marriage.

How wonderful your post about fate and chance should come out on the 13th. It was 35 years ago my wife and I got married. It was surely fate and chance that brought us together! Also known as God's will.

"What is the fire in our belly but the eternal flame of a thousand ancestors." You are touching so many lives so gently & sweetly Robert. Many thanks

Robert Brault said...

Anon,
Congratulations. Fate, Chance, God's Will -- we all try to account for our lives somehow. What are the chances that two raindrops, flung from the heavens, will merge on a windowpane? Gotta be Fate.

Raj,
Thanks, but five lost followers in three days tells me that not all I say is gentle and sweet enough for some.

What a post Robert...all so good! I particularly like the above because of the attention to something I'd never realised before.

Ariana,
Wow, how do you actually do this? How did you turn up an elderly couple by a duck pond? I am amazed and appreciative beyond words. And it strikes me, of course, that this is what a book collection of my stuff should look like -- a series of captioned photographs and artwork. You have got me thinking... .

Ken,
How really great to see you back. I will be checking in -- and hope especially to see a few new items in Ken Devine Original Art. Please do pick up that brush!

Thanks. Enjoyed so much your book, "God's Comeback Kids" and will be looking in on

If you are challenged by my words, you meet the challenge always with imagination and taste. If I were the humble type, I'd really be embarrassed.

Dear Robert, I just found you, accidentally, searching for a quotation about art and the artist, and I have discovered much more. Consider yourself bookmarked. I will return repeatedly for inspiration. I too blog addictively. It began as one similar to yours. For almost one year it has turned into a crusade to return three children from government care into the custody of their parents. http://www.ronunruhGPS.blogspot.com

Robert Brault said...

Ron,
Thanks -- and welcome. I pray you find justice in your cause. There will be no crusades here, just an attempt to say things that capture the common human experience.

Hi Robert,

You have a gift and I feel blessed to have read your quotes. You seem to know all the right words to how I feel. Thanks again! God Bless.
