Some Halloween thoughts, old and new
"I don't know that there are haunted houses. I know that there are dark staircases and haunted people."
"The saddest ghouls of Halloween sit in darkened houses as trick-or-treaters scurry past."
"For every bodiless spirit you encounter, there is a spiritless body you really don't want to run across."
"There are moonlit nights when the dead send their ghosts to haunt us -- and dark, misty nights when they come themselves."
"I don't know that there are real ghosts and goblins, but there are always more trick-or-treaters than neighborhood kids."
"Childhood ends when we realize that Santa Claus is make-believe, and the monster in the closet is for real."
"There is a lasting bond forged between two people who have hid together under the same bed."
The Grab Bag
"If you want your explanation accepted, stop explaining."
"To the skeptic, that which cannot be explained is a mystery. To the believer, that which cannot be explained is the explanation."
"It is not necessary that a truthful explanation be to anyone's satisfaction."
"I want to thank God for my life, which is to say, for this brief opportunity to explain myself."
"We all must live our life story, as much as we might prefer to live a synopsis."
"Science has always been less interested in when the world began than in when 2 + 2 started to equal 4."
"All science is reverse engineering, albeit with the steadfast insistence that there was no engineer to begin with."
"Every good speech contains a summary that would have made a great speech."
"The definition of insanity, said Einstein, is doing the same thing over and over again expecting a different result. And here I thought that was the definition of sex."
Today's cheery thought. In life we are all Heinlein's Stranger in a Strange Land, in death Faulkner's Intruder in the Dust.
I had this dream where I came face to face with God, and I said, "Lord, why did you create the world?" And God said, "That wasn't me."
"To be bound by our choices is not to have lost our freedom but to have exercised it."
"Failure is the insufficient foresight to have a fuzzy enough goal."
"Most long-married couples, one suspects, married for marriage."

I hope I never become one of these!

A good reminder for me, as I do tend to go on and on and on, given the opportunity.
=)

LOVE IT.

I never leave your place w/out food for thought. Your quote in my mind, is profound. "All science is reverse engineering, albeit with the steadfast insistence that there was no engineer to begin with." I've come to think that faith in no God requires perhaps greater exercise of faith than even a fundamentalist Christian, It is a choice. We simply are not left with the option of living without faith of some sort. As you correctly surmise, I really enjoy your posts! don
Oooh, Robert! I'm pretty sure it hasn't been a month yet, but I can't help myself. I simply MUST leave a comment! :D
I loved the thoughts you added to Einstein's definition of insanity! And, your quote about God saying he wasn't the one who created our world! Verrrry interesting and much food for thought!! And as always, many thanks.

Sue,
Sad ghoul? Never. To my eyes, you have the face of the friendly neighborhood candy dispenser.
Tam,
Given your moniker, I should warn you that I come down on the side of the believer on this one.
Don/Anon,
As I said somewhere, skepticism is a faith cleverly disguised as doubt, lest it have to prove itself.
Becky,
Thanks, good friend. I will be over to your place shortly. (I'll be the trick-or-treater in the size 13W's.)
Rashmila,
Welcome. While I usually aim for "How true, how true," I like to throw in a thought-provoker every once in a while.

Good idea, sometimes it really works.
Btw, Glad to have discovered this blog.
Best Wishes

Oh, I know. :) I've read your blog for a while. I like reading the other side of things.
And you are quite genius. There is one quote of yours which I use whenever I can: "There is no such thing as a list of reasons. There is either one sufficient reason or a list of excuses." That has to be one of the best things I have ever read.

Great!!! the whole stuff is magnificient!
how can i sort out the best... these 4 i love more...

Eyewitness,
Thanks -- and welcome! Greetings to my legion of fans in Pakistan.
Les Pet Skep,
List of excuses -- that's one nobody ever noticed before. Thanks.

Your appreciations always appreciated, my friend.

So true. I have an unfortunate tendency to over explain, especially when it comes to my shortcomings.
But my shortcomings will never include being the ghoul in the dark house watching the trick or treaters pass by. I LOVE those excited little faces!
karen,
It would be a better world if everyone thought as you do -- that friends are entitled to an explanation and kids to a treat on Halloween.
smiles,
