Round Up the Usual Subjects -- Part Two

On Kids

"It is not blindness to think our own child special; it is blindness to think that somebody else's isn't."

"Our children are beings completely invisible to us except through the eyes of hope."

On Optimism

"It can be said of optimism that while sometimes mistaken, it is never sadly mistaken."

"An optimist is someone who believes that good things come in threes -- and cockroaches come in ones."

"How do you tell an optimist that he or she has lived a happy life by mistake?"

On Moms

"There is a time early in life when there seem to be countless reasons for happiness, and then you discover your mom is making them up."

"There is little you achieve whose possibility was not first exaggerated by your mom."

"There is this about a mom's approval -- that the more you know you have it, the more you want to earn it."

On Fate

"Every person born has been chosen by fate from a trillion possibilities. So if you ever wondered what you would do if you won the lottery, you're doing it."

On Skepticism

"There is a mindset that rejects anything that cannot be further explained, including a complete explanation."

On Ingenuity

All I can say is, I'm cashing a lot more checks since I legally changed my name to "Non-Negotiable."

On Aging

"I arrive at age 72 convinced that sometime early in my life there was a briefing that I missed."

"A common disease of middle-age is late-onset pig-headedness."

On Artificial Intelligence

"Someday, all other things being equal, all other equals will be things."

On Letting Ourselves Be Happy

"There is no greater obstacle to happiness than our own better judgment."

"What is our better judgment but our own personal piece of the conventional wisdom, which is always wrong."

"If we can be unaccountably sad, then why insist that happiness have a reason?"

Am trying to look through "the eyes of hope." that one "has lived a happy life by mistake" partly "exaggerated by ... mom". Simply graceful Robert !

"How do you tell an optimist that he or she has lived a happy life by mistake?" "There is no greater obstacle to happiness than our own better judgment." These two seem the perfect counterpoint to each other. It is not wisdom to be too wise. Some errors are well worth making.

Incidentally Robert, you once mentioned a battle of the aphorisms, but confined me to 6-8 words.
So here's my contribution:

"Optimists think badly, but live well."

Robert, a friend and I were just talking about you at lunch yesterday....TRUE....and I had my laptop with me...and when I opened it and got on my blog, we were both thrilled to see you had a new post!! Yippee!! We both scrolled through quickly and said we'd have to read them later at home when we could really let it all sink in....Thank you, as always!

I thought every single one was brilliant!
I laughed out loud, smiled, thought a bit, then laughed out loud again. Now I'm thinking again.

Thanks, Robert. Your vacation didn't do you any harm, it seems:)

I am so glad a jr. high school friend (from DECADES ago!) quoted you and gave the link. Not only do I really like what you write... I imagine you manage to leave out the trivial stuff! Bravo, sir. I'd think a publisher would like to publish these... with our without illustrations. Andrews McNeel, maybe?
I'll be back. Happy writing.

To all ye faithful,
Thanks so much. I will try to return a meaningful thanks by getting caught up on your blogs this week. I have glanced at most today and see many things worthy of an appreciative comment. I am embarrassed that your commenting here is so often a one-way street. I hope to do better by you in the future.

PainterWoman,
Welcome to the blog. I checked out the Andrews McNeel site, and you're right -- if I'm ever going to publish, they're the people to try. Thanks for your kind interest.

That's truly being optimistic!! ;) I guess we always expect the good to overcome the bad. It makes us more hopeful, without disregarding the fact that we are human. As long as life doesn't tilt the scales in favour of the bad, I am ok with it.

Izabel,
Let life tilt the scales as it may, It doesn't deter the optimist.
