Ten Thoughts, Three Tips and a Near-Death Experience
Ten thoughts, some new, some twittered this past week:
"If you don't believe in miracles, God probably isn't going to waste one on you."
"It is only reality until you decide that you've put up with it long enough."
"If we are ever going to be happy, we must be happy knowing we could be happier."
"It is only a basic human right until it starts interrupting the flow of oil from the Middle East."
"Love your enemies, for it gets their goat."
"It is said that travel is broadening, and so I have found it -- never failing to broaden my appreciation of home."
"Never point a finger where you never lent a hand."
"A scientific fact is that tiny part of human perception that defies illogical explanation."
"When you speak, always tell the truth. But don't always speak."
"It is a perversity of human nature to think that in order to find happiness we must abandon those who most wish it for us."
Three tips that I have found useful in life:
"When confronted by a barking dog, never turn tail and run. The dog might mistake this for fear."
"To tell your friends from your enemies, stand at the edge of a cliff and notice which ones don't push you off."
"As a rule, you can trust people, except when you're hiding out in the witness protection program, and a guy named Tony Bananas calls out, "Olly olly oxen free."
A near-death experience:
I had this near-death experience where I met St. Peter at the pearly gates, only the pearls in the gate were cheap paste, and St. Peter was obviously wearing a false beard, and he had a pitchfork and a tail and little horns growing out of his head. And I said, "Wait a second here..."

"If you don't believe in miracles, God probably isn't going to waste one on you."
So true!
=)
I loved the finger-after-hand and the silent true. By the second I have to admit I find it very hard to live... but try to remember more and more lately that a silent thought may sometime bring you closer to dear people, than the outspoken one - that may pull you apart. Whenever I want closeness I'd better practice the silence exercise more often.
Thank you again for not keeping quiet.
"It is only reality until you decide that you've put up with it long enough." -- Then what does it become, Robert?
Hi Robert! I'm stealing a few moments to catch up on your posts! It's been quite a September with our N.E. floods {we're okay, but nearby communities are still hurting} and the first week of school.
I love your "speak the truth" quote... another great one for my chalkboard!
Wishing you well and looking forward to your calendar! The anticipation must be so exciting!
Happy days to you!

"When you speak, always tell the truth. But don't always speak."
You don't always notice when someone follows this simple rule, but oh, it's very evident when they don't. Telling the truth isn't all that hard, but its very difficult to resist the temptation to always put in your two cents.
"When you speak, always tell the truth. But don't always speak."
Speaking the truth is ok, sometimes it is what's needed to help others. The challenge is,
is it worth the cost to you.
Rob,
Sue,
Said another way, "One of the things God leaves up to us is whether we wish to have miracles in our lives."
Georgina,
To coin another phrase, "How often what we say to break an embarrassing silence is more embarrassing than the silence."
Becky,
It becomes the stuff of your dreams. Simply compare man's perception of reality in the year 1000 with his perception in year 2000.
Maria,
I'll be in Schenectady next week for Joan's 55th HS reunion, and I hope things have dried out by then. Wish you the best for the new school year. Yes, pretty excited about the calendar. Hope to introduce it next week.
karen,
Well said. We can hope that the God of judgment takes note of all the times we held our tongue.
Anon,
To quote myself again, "Cherish the friend who tells you a harsh truth, wanting ten times more to tell you a loving lie."
smiles all,
rb
Bob, obviously all near death experiences have their own interpretations...I don't know how you perceive St. Peter having pitchfork and a tail but I guess he is actually Lucifer...just a thought!!! Cheers.
"It is only reality until you decide that you've put up with it long enough."
Pretty deep Robert. Your writing has such a wonderful mix of deep and lighthearted. Shows great balance :)
I want a calendar.
Tooth,
Just a bit of whimsy, not really worthy of interpretation.
Biddy,
Thank you, but I fear that when it comes to aphorisms, the opposite of "good" is "deep." (smile)
Don,
Hey, I see you're using your own name today. I'll introduce the calendar this Thursday (Sep 22) and hope we can start taking orders soon after.
smiles all,

Using your kindness quote on mtg FB status today...thank you
ARIE, much obliged. Thank you -- and smiles, rb.
I so love the thought about traveling - -I have to admit that I'm a true homebody. While I do love to travel, the best part for me is coming home. I love being home.
And LOVE the thought of God not wasting a miracle on someone who doesn't believe. Made my day today!!
Jan,
Thank you. Thinking of you always provide me an anchor when my thoughts begin to drift dangerously from port.

"It is a perversity of human nature to think that in order to find happiness we must abandon those who most wish it for us."
Wow. You're not wrong there, mate.
Anon,
Thought you might agree. (smile)
Thanks,, you just added inches to my hope. :).
WOW! "If you don't believe in miracles, God probably isn't going to waste one on you." is my fav! luv it!
gyanne,
Welcome to the blog. Will do my best to keep adding those inches.

Always insightful Robert … to learn about “perversity of human nature..”.. "When confronted by a barking dog,. and notice which ones don't push you off." Grateful
Raj, thanks as always, friend.
"If you don't believe in miracles, God probably isn't going to waste one on you." love all of ur quotes, though I can't say this is my fav. Who better for god to "waste" a miracle on than on his lost children.. Such a thing might bring them home.. What a terrible thought.. Shame on those who thought this was the best.
