Thoughts, Some Newer Than Others

"There is no harder thing to give up than the thing that was supposed to make you happy."

Sign in a pet store: "It's a special friend who dispels your loneliness and leaves your solitude intact."

"You can hope for a miracle in your life, or you can realize that your life is the miracle."

"There are three dimensions of time, two of which contain happier days."

"What has always put me off about atheism is that atheists don't seem to struggle with it enough."

There is no scientific theory of the universe that sufficiently answers the question: "Who entrusted to me this child?"

"If Mother Nature wanted us to know everything, she would not, at the very peak of our intellectual curiosity, distract us with puberty."

Occasionally ask, "What do I believe that gives me no advantage over anyone?"

"To deny any truth is to begin a chain of denial that must eventually deny every truth  there is."

"As an example of my luck, I was once dealt a royal straight flush in a game of Fish."

"Give kids your trust, and they will work ten times harder to keep it than they ever would to earn it."

"I pray to God that He never makes me choose between a community heaven and a private hell."

"We don't know what heaven is like, but based on what most lottery winners do with their winnings, we know what hell is like."

"I wouldn't say I was ever possessed by the devil, but he occasionally rented a room on a Saturday night."

"Occasionally it's good to get your most trusted advisors together on a sunny day to make sure they all cast a shadow."

"If you don't decide what your life is about, it defaults to what you spend your days doing."

Robert, reading your tidbits of wisdom is a great way to start my day. I really smiled at the one about the game of Fish! :D

Love all of this. Timeless wisdom is universal and speaks through everything. A body is merely a vessel that exists to draw attention to the heart and remind us all what the spirit knows.

I really like this one.

I am only 14 years old and feel the power of your wisdom. I hope one day I will either meet someone of such amazing wisdom or become one myself. Thank you for the "woman in the checkout line" she brought tears to my eyes and a great daily reading for my honours English class.

This made a sad day for me a bright one. Thank you.

I feel bad that everyone else picked the noble, wise sayings. But I'd be lying if I didn't tell you that my favorite is

I wouldn't say I was ever possessed by the devil, but he occasionally rented a room on a Saturday night.

Makes me laugh just to read it. I was a little wild, and I still am in my head.

Becky,
I was actually pretty good at playing Fish. You've heard of a poker face? I have this natural-born fish face.

Liara,
Thanks. Any of my readers looking to buy stuff might check out your site.

Sue,
Glad you like. Works better in the singular, but it's another instance where the inability of the English language to solve the he/she dilemma forces you into the plural.

Emma,
Thanks so much. It's so rewarding to "connect" with a person your age. Your kind comment brings disproportionate pleasure indeed.

Taylor,
We'll hope together for a brighter day. You've brightened mine.

karen,
Yeah, I seem to remember -- there was a girl named karen...

Parag,
Good to have you stop by again. Thanks.

"You can hope for a miracle in your life, or you realize that your life is the miracle."

How often I wondered why I wasn't one of the "lucky ones" to have a "wonderful" life. An abusive relationship, failed marriage, drinking problem etc. Then one day I realized it wasn't going to get any better until I got my act together. Out of the marriage the abuse stopped, funny but after the marriage was over so was the drinking! I literally woke up one morning, looked in the mirror and told myself it wasn't going to be a "good" life unless I made it so. Today I know that even during the dark times life was still a "miracle" and every day it just gets better and better.

Yesterday was my birthday, your post was the best gift I received. It was a subtle reminder of ALL the miracles in my life. Thank you...

ByNanasHands, it's generous of you to share this reflection. Thank you. These squibs of mine mean so much more when someone attaches a life's experience to them. A deserved pat on the back to you, along with a heartfelt "Happy Birthday!"

"Give kids your trust, and they will work ten times harder to keep it than they ever would to earn it."

I used to get in trouble so often, and every time I promised if they let me off this one time, I'd never get in trouble again.

The teachers always ended up punishing me, and since I sincerely meant my offer, it gave me anger and the will to misbehave again.

I really enjoy your writing, but today this one just got me into a case of the giggles.
"As an example of my luck, I was once dealt a royal straight flush in a game of Fish."
That's one of those statements that stops you in your tracks, and takes you down memory lane to the place where you relate.
Thanks for the smile.

Anon,
As I said to Nana, it's great to have someone relate real life experience to these slight thoughts. It's nice to know when one hits the mark.

Biddy,
I went over to your blog and found the wonderful life lesson you attached to my little joke. Recommend others take a look also. Thanks so much.

So glad I found your blog via Quote Garden. I use inspiring quotes when i send notes. Instead of sending specific occasion cards, I use blank ones and start with a quote. Yours are some of my favorites. I was awed and touched by the check out lane story this morning. Thank you.
