A Thanksgiving Recollection

I remember one Christmas being told that there was no Santa Claus, and the next Easter being told that there was no Easter Bunny, and I remember how I feared, as Thanksgiving approached, that they would tell me there was no Grandmother.

"Lord, we gather as a family to thank Thee for Thy every blessing, most especially for making us this family and granting us this gathering."

Happy Thanksgiving All,

I swear, Mr. Brault, you have the most unique take on life.

This reminded me of the year my husband and I told our youngest son there wasn't a Santa Claus. We did it in the summer or early fall, so he'd be prepared for that Christmas. He was in denial at first and semi devastated to find out his parents lied to him about something so BIG. Later that evening, he came from his room and said, "I guess there's no Easter Bunny, either, is there?"

nacherluver,
I know how you feel. When I found out there was no Santa, I went off into a corner of the bar and downed a half quart of whiskey.

Becky,
Your youngest still believes in the Tooth Fairy, I hope. Personally, it's all I'm left with. My parents were careful not to disillusion me. Dad used to say, "The Tooth Fairy was here, son. He left you a quarter. But the Sandman stole it."

Linda,
Oh, dear. I meant it to be wistful, not cruel. Next year I'll "recollect" it a little differently. (smile)

Oh, Robert....No, when he said that about the Easter Bunny, the Tooth Fairy came next. Pretty smart and perceptive little guy! :)

That's cute, Bob. I read it to my husband, and we both got a kick out of it.

That was such a sweet and touching thought! Family is so important and I hope you had a blessed Thanksgiving. (I also hope I can get this comment through. For some reason it keeps telling me that my Google account has no access to this page...)

All,
Thank you for good wishes. Joan and I had a wonderful Thanksgiving with family. Nobody left the table hungry, for which we remembered to be thankful. And our two young grandsons can have no doubt that Grandmother is for real.

Don, I'm not sure what you mean by "contriutions."
Do you mean "contributions" or "contritions."

Mr. Brault I came across your blog by chance looking for family quotes for a scrapbook I'm making for my son. He was born on mothers day and has brought so much joy to my life. I just want you to know how much I appreciate your lovely words you express things I've felt but not been able to put into words. Happy Thanksgiving to you - -I hope I can be the grandma by which my little guys know that Grandmother is for real too!

vocalise said...

Oh my. Pretty fun way you just posted tons of your thoughts...all categorized, I mean. Very helpful!

Robert Brault said...

Jan,
Something tells me that those little guys know full well that Grandmother is for real.

vocalise,
Actually there's still no collection where you can just look up my quotes by category -- but, hey, if you find a few Mark Twains in the mix, so much the better.
